Won't An Over Counter Arch Support Do The Same As A Custom Orthotic?
No. your feet alignment is as individual as you are! Custom orthotics are engineered to your individual foot to optimise alignment, comfort and function.
Do Orthotics Just Support My Arch?
No. They align the numerous segments and joints of the foot and ankle with your leg and the earth's surface to create better function. They allow for better foot movement and stability.
Will I Need A Bigger or Special Shoes For My Custom Orthotics?
Generally not. Our aim is to advise you on appropriate choices of footwear.
Will I Need To Wear Custom Orthotics All The Time?
The more you wear them the better. However, if you are going out for the evening - indulge yourself and wear what you like. Some patients like to have a second set of orthotics for their dress shoes (beneficial, but not essential!).
Will My Feet Correct With Orthotics?
Orthotics only work when they are worn in your shoes. In general, most patients will need to continue their orthotic treatment long term. When we recast and rescan your feet- our state of art equipment allows us to monitor changes in foot shape.
How Long Will Custom Orthotics last?
Your orthotics are a personal, custom engineered product. They will not last forever as the material needs to be comfotable for your use.
To ensure that you continue to enjoy the benefits of using your orthotics they should be renewed on average every 3 to 4 years.
Some patients with podiatric issues will need to renew orthotics more regularly and we will advise on an individual basis.
With every day use your orthotics will receive huge amounts of cumulative stress. They are built to withstand this, but the materials will wear with time.
At Northernhay Clinic we currently operate a computerised reminder system for patients. At follow-up we will re-check your foot function, take new casts and ensure your foot orthotics meet your current need. Taking new casts enables us to check old scan files against new ones and detect any major changes in foot shape.
Children are growing and will outgrow their orthotics more frequently. Most orthotic laboratories offer discounted renewal schemes up to age 13. We will advise on discounted renewal schemes available at the consultation. We will also advise the simple terms & conditions that apply.
